Work from home

Managing Personal & Professional Life during WFH

The term WFH has taken a special place in 2020 owing to the Covid19 pandemic. Today many companies are slowly and gradually shifting to the work from home model for the long run. IT sector has especially been at the forefront of this movement. Because much of the work can be done either on personal systems or by using virtual machines in case of higher system requirements, it has come as a boon for many working professionals.

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new

Today, you can finish your targets at home while sipping your favorite coffee and playing your music on the loudspeaker. The WFH model has ensured that you get more time for yourself. There is no traveling to the office, hence you save at least a couple of hours every day. A study conducted by Stanford on 16000 employees over 9 months suggested that productivity increased by 13 percent. While work from home has indeed come as a brilliant solution to maintain social distancing as well as increase productivity, it does not work for everybody. Just like two sides of a coin, work from home has another side to it.

Some problems faced during WFH:

  • Many times employees start feeling alienated working from a remote environment and start getting lazy.
  • Lack of communication between the employees and leadership because how long will you video call?
  • Anxiety due to staying indoors for too long.
  • Health issues due to lack of exercise
  • Unable to create a balance between personal and professional life.

Well, the list can go on and can be a little different for everybody. Uncle Ben said in the first movie of spider man series “Great powers bring great responsibilities” Similarly, WFH can be a great power that saves you time, enables you to have more time for yourself and your family, and increases productivity. However, we need to be responsible so that our work and personal life are not affected.

Work from home
  • Learn to Prioritize: Always create a plan of action for the day and make sure you work according to it. Divide the hours with small breaks in between them.
  • Avoid Procastination: You are feeling this PPT can be made in 15 minutes so you decide to do it later even when you had time. Avoid doing this as it will create a pile of work resulting in low output for each work done in haste.
  • Know When to Say No: Just because you are working from home does not mean you should work at any time or all the time. If your office hours end at 5, ensure that your work is finished around it so that you don’t have to give up on your personal time. Point 1 will help you to do that.
  • Stay Healthy: Staying at home gives you some extra hours. Try joining the gym or challenge your child for a game of badminton in the park. Have your meals timely and avoid stress eating.
  • Keep a Watch on Non-Essential Activities: Use your phone only when it is needed. We often waste our time over the phone and we don’t even realize it until the damage has been done. Limit the use of things that distract you.
  • Communication is Important: Always send daily status to your reporting officer or as instructed by him. In these times when you are not physically present at your office, it becomes extremely important for you to report what you have done. Always remember, no status = no work.
